A Special Surprise!

During my time at the hospital with my dad, I was so touched by my friends that reached out to me and my family. Some friends were with me at the hospital, some called to check on us daily, and some prayed for us from afar.

One evening when Shannon stopped by to check on daddy and me, he came bearing a package. It had frog stickers on it, so I knew immediately that it must be from a bloggy friend. And it was! It was from Tracey at the Grace Comes By Hearing blog. I was so surprised and tickled. When I first opened the package up, I noticed that it was full of cotton balls.

Shiver.

Since the envelope was full of cotton balls, I had Shannon pull out the other contents.......

There was a sweet card, some gum, a chocolate bar, some frog iron-ons, and last, but not least, there was a little kit to assemble a frog puppet.

Shiver.

Tracey had also sent a separate card that played music; I loved it!. (I wish you could have all seen Allie's reaction to that. It was so funny! She simply does not care for the musical cards.) :)

Tracey, if you are reading this, thank you so much for taking the time to put this package together for me. You made Shannon and me laugh out loud with all of the thought that you put into this gift. What a special surprise!

What you did means so much to me and my family; you are such a blessing!

“Every gift from a friend is a wish for your happiness.” ~Richard Bach

I will be at my parent's house each day this week, so that I can just keep an eye on my dad while my mom is at work and help him with any thing he may need. If you don't see me around Blog Land as often as you normally do, don't worry, I will be back around to blog stalking everyone on a regular basis very soon.;)

Once again, I want to thank each and every one of you for the sweet comments and prayers for my family. You are all such a special group of people.

My cup runneth over.

Movies, And Bathrooms, And Kid Rock, Oh My!

With all of my back recovery nonsense, I have not been out of my house to have any fun since I returned from my trip to the Mediterranean.

Needless to say, I really wanted to get out and do something fun, even if it was just for a little bit.

So, when my sweet bloggy buddy, Shelly, called and asked me if I would like to join her and her mom to go to lunch and a movie, I shouted said, "Yes!"

I met Shelly and her mom at Crazyville's McAlister's Deli for lunch.

I had never been there before, so I wasn't sure at first what to order, but it did not take me long to figure out what I wanted. Once I saw that the words chicken and pesto were available on the same sandwich, I was sold. It was delicious!

The only problem that I had with the sandwich was trying to get all of the pesto off of my teeth when I was finished eating. (But don't worry, Shelly taught me the swishing of the Diet Coke technique, which please let me say, worked beautifully. So when we left the restaurant, my teeth were mostly pesto free.)

The movie that we went to see was The Women. I loved it! I laughed through the entire movie.

And just let me say, " I love, love, loved Meg Ryan's hair."

If you have read this blog even once before, then chances are that you already know I have a few bathroom related issues. Specifically public bathroom related issues.
So, it will be no surprise to you when I tell you that I had Shelly take some pictures in what has to be one of the most pitiful public restroom situations that I have found myself in since I was in Europe.

There are several sets of restrooms in the movie theater in Crazyville, but somehow, we managed to go into the restroom that was in horrific not in the best condition.

This particular restroom has three stalls.

The first stall was completely "Out of Order."

The second stall was completely missing a lock on the door. (I had to hold the door so Shelly's mom could use the bathroom.)

And the third stall's lock was being held onto to the door by what appeared to be some sort of florescent green bread ties.

You just cannot make stuff like this up, and what is really strange, is that this theater is located in a very nice part of Crazyville.

Well, after all of our bathroom and movie nonsense were over, Shelly's mom took our picture sitting together in the theater lobby. I do love that Shelly.

After sucking in our stomachs and having our picture made together, Shelly spotted someone something that she thought I might like standing in the lobby.

It was a BIG cardboard picture of Kid Rock. (I had just confessed about my little crush on him and his singing voice to Shelly during the previews before the movie.)

Don't judge.

Before you start throwing tomatoes at me, I didn't say that I agreed with his lifestyle, personal choices, or anything else like that; I just simply said that I appreciate his singing voice.

I'm just saying is all.

Thankfulness

I want to start this post off by saying, "Thank you!" My family and I have been so touched by the outpouring of prayers and well wishes from all of you.

Proverbs 16:24
"Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."

It's hard to admit sometimes, but I struggled so much with starting this blog. I felt the Lord leading me to do it, but inside, I was so fearful. Fearful of looking and sounding like an idiot, and I was even more fearful of tens of people reading whatever I wrote and telling me that I looked and sounded like an idiot. Writing was not (and still isn't) my strong point. If you don't believe me, just ask my "Remedial Writing Composition" teacher that I had in college.

Sigh.

Much like Moses, I argued with God as He was leading me to write and share stories about Him and His presence in my life.

Exodus 4:10-12
Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." The LORD said to him, "...I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."

And much like Moses, I got over myself and followed God, and I am so thankful that I did.

I have been overwhelming blessed through this journey in Blog Land. I am just so thankful to have met each and every one of you. You have all been such a blessing to me and my family.

I have been at the hospital with my dad for most of this past week, which is why I have not been able to give you an update before now.

As I type this he is pulling up in the driveway of his home.

It has been an incredibly long week, but we have all been blessed beyond measure.

I was the first person in the family to see my dad once he was awake and had the ventilator tube removed.

When he saw me, his eyes lit up, and he said, "Hey, Sissy!" And then he looked at me very seriously and asked, "Am I alive, Amy? Did I make it?"

And I answered him by saying, "Yes, Daddy, you are alive; you did make it."

Sigh. Thank you, Jesus.

His recovery has been amazing! Although he has a long way to go, he has come so far.

Yesterday, the physical therapist came by to help him walk, and he walked a long way down the CVICU unit hall and all the way back again. It dawned on me as I saw him walking, that last Friday, when my mom brought him to the hospital for his heart cath, he had to ride in a wheelchair from the hospital entrance to the Same Day Surgery unit. He was in such bad shape that he could not walk that far. Then, there he was, just three days after surgery, walking farther than he had walked in a year.

It was incredible to see, and I was once again reminded of his "blessing" that I pulled from the blessing jar at the hospital.

Psalms 13:5-6

"I trust your love,

and I feel like celebrating

because you rescued me.

You have been good to me, LORD,

and I will sing about you."

God did indeed rescue him.

I have quite a few stories to share with you about our experiences this week, but for today, I just want to tell you all that he is doing well.

He will, obviously, have a long recovery ahead of him, but the surgery went so much better than we could have ever hoped for, and he had the best sense of humor even on the roughest days.

One morning while I was in the room with him, he looked at me and said, "Amy, when you leave, tell your mom to come in here. I want to talk to her about my will."

I looked at him strangely for a second, hoping that he was not going to get all morbid on me.

Then he continued talking and said, "I want to tell her.....that I don't have any money....." At that point he started laughing so hard, that he had to grab his heart shaped pillow and hug it tightly to his chest.

(You can probably tell from that comment where my sense of humor must come from.) ;)

I have always heard that our attitudes through difficult situations are half of the battle, so when he was making jokes the day after surgery, I realized that he was going to be just fine.

Psalms 100

"Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations."

Update On My Dad

I wanted to give you all an update on my dad's condition.

After his heart cath on Friday, the doctor's let us know what they had discovered.

First of all, he will have to have triple bypass surgery, because his blockages are very severe.

Secondly, he has an abdominal aortic aneurysm. After further testing on that, they discovered that it is 4 cm; they typically only operate on them once they reach 5 cm, so for now, they will just keep a close eye on it.

He will be having his bypass surgery on Monday at 1:00 pm, if all goes according to plan.

He is, obviously, very overwhelmed right now. They kept him in the hospital for the weekend, so that they could do further testing on him, and also so that they could keep an eye on his blood pressure and heart rate. Not to mention they are giving him meds to help calm his nerves.

God has shown himself to us over and over since we have been at the hospital. People from my mom's Sunday school class, have already been up to the hospital to visit and pray over him.

And as it turns out, my mom and dad's next door neighbor is the church chaplain, so that was very comforting for my dad to see her and have her pray for him.

Not to mention the pulmonologist that came in to see him and talk about his lung functions prayed for him. We had never had a doctor to do that before, so it was needless to say, very comforting.

As I was walking to his room yesterday, I noticed a little jar on a counter near the waiting room. There was a sign by the jar that said something like, "Grab your blessing for today."

So, I said a little prayer for my dad, and I grabbed a "blessing" for him.

This is what his "blessing" said.

Psalms 13:5-6

"I trust your love,

and I feel like celebrating

because you rescued me.

You have been good to me, LORD,

and I will sing about you."

I am saving this for him, because I feel like after he recovers and is on the way to better health, that he will know that he knows that it was God that rescued him. What a blessing! Amen?

I thank you all for your prayers for my family, and as soon as I am able, I will post an update to let you all know how my dad is doing.

God Bless,
Amy

Psalms 119:76
"May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant."

A Little Update And A Bloggy Award

I had my back surgery on July 3rd, and unfortunately I am still having some issues. I called my neurosurgeon last week, and he told me that what I am dealing with is a form of traumatic neuritis. Which simply means that there has been some trauma to my nerves. He said that it could take another month or another year to heal completely. And even then, with the nerve damage that I have experienced, my new normal may not be the same as my old normal.

The symptoms that I am dealing with are back pain, leg and foot cramps, along with burning, redness, and tenderness in my right foot, all of which cause me to walk with a limp. (Which I like to tell Shannon is all the rage now with the runway models.)

Sigh.

He wants to see me October 13th, and if I am still having the same symptoms at that time, there are a couple of things he may have me do. One is to wear a back brace, and two is more bed rest. In the mean time, he said that if I cook dinner or clean up the kitchen (for example), I need to lie down for an hour or two afterward to rest my back. Right now, even grocery shopping is too much walking for me; I just can't be on my feet for very long at all without suffering the consequences.

Needless to say, as a wife and homeschooling mother of two, that is not what I wanted to hear. Don't get me wrong, resting and a back brace are much better alternatives than another surgery, but lying down all of the time is not always very convenient.

He told me that I was going to have to be patient. He said to me, "Where do you think the term for patients comes from? It comes from the word patient, because patients have to be patient while they are healing."

I had never heard that before, but he is definitely right. I need to be patient. And I am sorry to say that is not always my strong point. But that is exactly what God's Word tells me to do.

Romans 12:12
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

I looked up the meanings for the word "patient."

1: bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint
2: manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain
3: not hasty or impetuous
4: steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity
5: able or willing to bear

It is never not always easy or convenient, but I am trying.

So now, after I do some of my housework.....

......I try to lie down for an hour or two, just like the doctor said.

I am trying each day to be patient just like God and the doctor ordered.

Hebrews 6:15
And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

It looks like I may be in for a long journey on this road to healing, but I know that God is with me each step of the way. And I know that just like with the changing of the seasons, this too shall pass.

James 5:7-8
Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.

And speaking of the changing seasons, you know the old saying, "When it rains, it pours?" Well, it has been pouring on my family lately.

Last Friday, I had to carry my dad to the doctor. Long story short, he is not in good health. He has heart disease, and his heart is not functioning very well right now. Tomorrow (Friday) I am going to the hospital with him. He has been scheduled for a Cardiac Catheterization, and they won't know what needs to be done for him until they get in there and take a look. He could need stints, or worse case scenario, triple bypass surgery.

My mom is also waiting to have knee replacement surgery on October 6th, and she just had a nerve block this past Wednesday (yesterday). She is having a very difficult time physically as well as emotionally with so much going on.

I'm not telling you all of this to whine or complain, just to let you know what is going on in my life, and if you don't see me around blog land very much for a bit, you will know why. So, if you feel led to do so, please pray for my family.

I completely trust God with whatever is on the road ahead of us, but in my human skin, it can be just a bit overwhelming at times.

Psalms 112:7
"He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord."

And now for a bit of fun and happy news, I want to shout out a big, "Thank you," to JJ at the Dirty Laundry blog for giving me this bloggy award. This means so much to me, JJ; thank you for thinking of me.

Sigh.

Now it's my turn to hand over the award!

Tell Me Your Story Tag~ Part Two

(To read Part One, click here.)

Well, after our impromptu meeting in Crazyville, several months passed by.

I no longer had a boyfriend, and I was just certain that I was doomed to a life of spinsterhood.

I remember crying to my mom about my bleak looking future. I told her that I thought I was NEVER going to meet anybody. I would be tragically alone, and one day be pawned off to go live with family somewhere else, much like Aunt Bee.

Sigh.

Not long after my breakdown, following my startling realization that I was definitely going to be doomed to a life of spinsterhood, I ran into Shannon again.

My friend and Shannon's brother were preparing to get married, and I was helping her do some things to get ready for the wedding. You know important things like tanning, so we would both look beautifully sun baked in all of the wedding pictures. I was going to be her maid of honor, and Shannon was going to be the best man.

Sigh.

We both stopped by Shannon's brother's house on the way to the tanning bed, and lo' and behold Shannon was there too. This was very unusual for him at the time, considering that he was a hermit, who for the most part, never left Crazyville.

But this time, I did notice him, and he noticed me.

Sigh.

However, I did not want anyone to know that I noticed him, especially since I was still pretty well convinced that I was tragically doomed to a life of spinsterhood.

So, as we were leaving to go to the tanning bed, I very nosily asked my friend, if she thought Shannon would still be there when we returned from tanning. (See, my friend was making us all dinner that night, and I being the kind girl that I am, did not like the thought of Shannon going all the way back to Crazyville alone. Especially when I knew, what with him being a hermit and all, that he would probably really love a good home cooked meal.)

She quickly answered my question with these words, "No, he won't be there...He never hangs around for very long."

Sigh.

Like I said earlier, I just knew that I was doomed to a life of spinsterhood.

So, we went tanning, and we returned home to prepare dinner.

Only to my very joyous surprise, Shannon was still there.

Come to find out, he decided to hang around, once he asked his brother if I was returning, and his brother said, "Yes, she's coming back to eat dinner with us."

Sigh.

And the rest, my bloggy friends, is all romantic history.

We have been together pretty much like an old married couple ever since.

He has told me many times over the years (while being forced at gun point by me to repeat the story) that he thought about me all of the time after that first visit I made to Crazyville.

Sigh.

There is, of course, more to the story, but let's just end it here for today by saying, "And they lived mostly happily ever after!"

Sigh.

So, now it's your turn my bloggy buddies. I am tagging ten several of you to tell me your story of love.

Tell Me Your Story Tag ~Part One

I have been tagged by my sweet bloggy friend, Dianne, from the Deez Dayz blog to do a post or two telling the story of how Shannon and I met and fell in love.

Sigh.

Dianne's post was, of course, wonderful. I highly recommend that you click here to read all about how she met and fell in love with her sweet hubby.

Sigh.

Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I was very excited about this tag.

So, without further ado, here is "our story."

Sigh.

If you have read this blog even once before, then you probably know that I am a girl who loves movie quotes....especially from Steel Magnolias.

There is a scene in that movie where Ms. Truvy is fixing Shelby's hair, and she asks Shelby to tell her what Jackson (her fiance') is like. Shelby grins and says, "Well, I thought he was a pest at first, but then he sort of grew on me, and now I love him."

Sigh.

I have said very similar words about my Shannon.

Shannon and I went to the same elementary school together for a while, but he was four years older than me, so I did not know who he was at the time. I was, however, in the same first grade class with his younger brother.

Even though Shannon and I went to the same school for a time, and grew up in the same neighborhood, we did not officially meet until I was in about the eleventh grade. My best friend had just starting dating Shannon's brother, and she was hoping to set me up with Shannon, you know, so we could all double date.

So, I fixed my hair (bless my heart), put on my make up, and donned some hideous outfit from the eighties, and I went with my friend over to Shannon and his brother's apartment.....I just knew love was going to be in the air.

Well, love was in the air alright.....but not in the way that I had hoped for.

Shannon was too busy flirting with three other (yes, I said three other) girls from the neighborhood. So busy, in fact, that till this day, he does not even remember me ever being in his apartment.

Sigh.

I was heartbroken. He did not even notice that I was in the apartment that night.

Sigh.

Well, I moved on with my life. Don't you all feel sorry for me though. There were plenty of other guys that came around and broke my heart. Like I've said before, my teenage years were tragic (much like my hair).

My friend continued to date Shannon's brother, so I heard about him from time to time in conversations, but I never gave him any more thought one way or the other.

Fast forward several years, I was dating somebody new, and my friend was still dating Shannon's brother. One evening, we all decided that we wanted to see a certain comedian's stand up routine, but none of us had it on videotape....But Shannon's brother remembered that Shannon had a copy of it........

So, we all piled up into the car and drove all the way out to Crazyville to borrow that tape.

My friend with her boyfriend, and me with mine.

When we pulled up to Shannon's place in Crazyville, I was less than impressed. I thought he lived out in the boonies.....Not to mention that he wasn't wearing a shirt, and had on some form of hunting boots that I thought looked ridiculous.

I starting conjuring up images of Jeremiah Johnson.

Minus the breathtaking Robert Redford part, of course. Sigh.

Interestingly enough, at this impromptu meeting of ours, Shannon did notice me. To this day, he can tell you what I was wearing, what I said, how I laughed, and he even remembers what he was thinking after I left with my boyfriend that day. He said that he thought to himself, "Man, I sure wish I had a girl like that."

Sigh.

I, on the other hand, came home with very different thoughts of our meeting that day. As we pulled out of Crazyville, I said to my friends, "I could NEVER live out here in Crazyville."

And as my mother still loves to tease me about, I came home and told her about meeting my friend's brother. I said, "I met my friend's brother today, and he is a hermit!"

Meanwhile, back in Crazyville, Shannon was still thinking about me.......

(To be continued tomorrow......)

♪ You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman ♪

"Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all." ~Harriet Van Horne

Labor Day weekend, Shannon decided that he wanted to do some grilling. We had several bags of chicken leg quarters that we needed to use from one of our Angel Food orders, so that is what he chose to cook. (Click here if you would like to learn more about this wonderful program. It can really help in stretching your family's food dollars.)

So, in today's post, Shannon will be sharing some of his grilling secrets with you. And since I love when my man cooks for me, I told him to just take his shirt off and get to it. ;)

He started out by cutting off all of the yucky pieces that you find on chicken. (Which is why we had three bags of this kind of chicken....I don't like to work with bones and skin....I prefer cooking with the boneless, skinless type of chicken. I'm just saying.)

"The way you cut your meat reflects the way you live." ~Confucius

I sure appreciate when my man is cooking in the kitchen.

I'm sorry, where was I?

Oh, yes, Shannon was cutting the yucky pieces off of the chicken.

After all of the cutting was done, he began rinsing off each piece of chicken.

As he rinsed off each piece, he placed them in this bowl.

Now it was time to start making his "secret" sauce....So let's just keep this one between us, mmmkay?

Like me, Shannon doesn't "measure" his spices; he just adds however much he wants too. All of these spices are being added to a bottle of Italian salad dressing.

So, he started out by adding a dash or three of Chili Powder.

Then he added a dash or two of Red Pepper.

Next up, he added a dash or four of Paprika.

Last, but not least, he added the most secret ingredient of all...Cumin....just a dash though, because Cumin has a lot of flavor.

Now it is time to shake the bottle to mix all the spices in with the Italian dressing. (Before doing this it's a very good idea to make sure you screw the lid on tight. Just a suggestion, mind you.)

Obviously, Shannon was very careful not to sling Italian dressing all over the kitchen.;)

(Please refer back to my suggestion.)

Now it was time to place all of those clean chicken pieces inside some gallon baggies, like so.

After filling the gallon baggies with chicken, Shannon added the Italian dressing and spices into each bag.

Half of the bottle into the first bag.....

And the other half into the second bag......

Once he poured out all of the dressing, it was time to zip the gallon baggies shut. Like so.....

Once he made sure that the "zippers" were secure, he shook the bags to make sure that all of the chicken was completely coated with the Italian dressing and spices.

Then, he just let the chicken stay in the bags for a few hours to marinate. (He just left them in the refrigerator until it was time to start grilling them.)

After placing the chicken in the refrigerator, Shannon had to clean up the "little" Italian dressing mishap.

Sigh.

I'm sorry, where was I again?

Oh, that's right, Shannon was cleaning up the Italian dressing mess.

That's much better!

Well, after several hours of marinating, it was finally time to put all of that chicken on the grill.

After the chicken had been on the grill for about ten minutes, Shannon then turned each piece of chicken over in an effort to sear both sides of the chicken and seal in the juices. Then he let them cook for approximately ten more minutes.

He wanted all of the pieces to look something like this.....

Mmmmmmmmmm!

Next he moved all of the chicken to one side of the grill.

He lifted up the grate and added dry mesquite wood chunks, which help to add an especially nice flavor to the chicken.

Once all of the mesquite wood was in place, Shannon arranged the chicken evenly on the grill, making sure none of the chicken was placed directly over the fire. Then he let it smoke on the grill for about 45 minutes.

Now, it was time to take all of that chicken off of the grill and take it inside to cook it some more. (He placed all of the chicken in a disposable aluminum "turkey" roasting pan.)

Once inside with the chicken, Shannon tore off a huge piece of aluminum foil, like so.

And with Allie's assistance (of course), he tightly covered the pan of chicken with the aluminum foil.

After that was done, Shannon placed the pan in the oven. The oven was preheated to 350 degrees. He let the chicken cook in the oven for approximately 45 minutes.

Allie is always on hand to help Shannon with the cleaning up of any kitchen "mishaps," such as Italian dressing all over the floor.

Sigh.

After 45 minutes, it was time to take all of that yummy smelling goodness out of the oven.

Once out of the oven, Shannon unveiled his chicken masterpiece.

Mmmmmmmmmmm! I wish you could smell it!

And Shannon served up all of that grilled chicken yummy goodness with a side of fries.

Mmmmmmmmmmm!

After taking just one bite of this delicious grilled chicken meal that my man made for me, my eyes rolled back in my head, and my heart started singing......

Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired
Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But your love was the key to peace my mind

Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like
A natural woman

When my soul was in the lost-and-found
You came along to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
Till your kiss helped me name it
Now I'm no longer doubtful of what I'm living for
Cause if I make you happy I don't need no more

Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like
A natural woman

Oh, baby, what you've done to me
You make me feel so good inside
And I just want to be close to you
You make me fell so alive
Cause you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like
A natural woman
