Fourth Stop: Sicily, Italy~ Part Two

To some of you reading this, it may come as a surprise to you to know that I love all things having to do with the Mafia. Not in real life, of course, just in movies and on television. (I have issues.)

There is a famous quote from the movie The Godfather that happens in the scene that this picture was taken from.

The famous line is: "Leave the gun; take the cannoli."

Anyway, after watching The Godfather thirty times, I have always wondered to myself, "What in the world is a cannoli?" I figured it must be pretty tasty to be worried about not forgetting it after murdering someone out in the middle of nowhere.

It sounded like some kind of pasta dish to me, but in the movies they always seem to have the cannoli in a pastry type box, so I figured that couldn't be right.

As it was getting time for our bus to take us back to the ship, it started to rain a little bit outside. So Melissa and I went inside the little food shop at the beach. The store was packed with people and full of good things to eat.

And that is when I first saw them........

At first, I was a little bit unsure of them; especially after being told by the lady at the counter (with a gorgeous Italian accent) that they are made of ricotta cheese and sugar.

Ewww! I thought to myself.

But the more I thought about it, it occurred to me, what better place in the world to try my very first cannoli than Sicily. I mean, Sicily is the birthplace of the Mafia and cannoli. And let's be honest, it's not like I'm going to be in Sicily any time again soon, amen?

So I decided just to go for it, and see what all the fuss was about. I shelled out two Euros, and I bought one.

And of course, I quickly snapped a picture of it. (Which is one of the reasons that I won't be going back to Sicily anytime soon.....Everyone there thinks I'm crazy because I wear winter garb at the beach, and because I take pictures of topless women and my food.)

Oh. My. Goodness.

It was delicious!

I totally understand how after murdering someone out in the middle of nowhere that a mobster would not want to forget his cannoli.

That was the sweetest tasting dessert that I have ever had.

As Melissa was waiting in line to get her treat (and my eyes were rolling back in my head), I screamed looked at her and said, "This is sooooooo goooooooood!"

She was trying a different dessert (which I also took a picture of while wearing winter garb).

As she was waiting in line, I told her that I would let her have a bite of my cannoli when she got to the table........

I lied.

By the time she got back to the table, I had finished that whole thing. (I believe I was wiping the extra cannoli off of my mouth as she walked up.) Melissa, if you are reading this, "I'm sorry, Friend!"

Unlike me, Melissa is not a complete pig, so she let me have a bite of her dessert. It was good, but it was definitely no cannoli.

After eating my cannoli, I snapped a couple of pictures of desserts for Mia before we had to get on the bus.

As we were lining up to get on the bus, Melissa noticed that our bus driver was a cutie. And since I already had my camera out taking pictures of topless women and food, she asked me to snap a picture of him.

So, of course, I did.

He did not seem too happy about it though; as soon as I went to snap the picture of him, he turned his head.

I guess not all Italian men love being photographed by a freakishly sunburned American woman at the beach dressed in full winter garb.

Men.

Go figure.

I expereinced the same thing in Greece, apparently they feel you have to pay them if you want their portrait, perhpas the same is true of most European men.

Your cannoli looks delicious, the cannolis here look completely different. They are made of soft wafer, chocloate ice cream and chocolate syrup swirled insdie and each end dipped in chocolate.

So I guess you literally got your just desserts for being such a sweetie. ;o)

Yum! What a fun trip! And, one of our dogs is named Vito from The Godfather - my husband's doing, as I've never seen any of the movies.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have met the "weight" restrictions for coming home had I taken an extended trip to Italy. I really should be Italian because pasta and bread and cannoli are some of my fav's. Although, I don't think I've seen a cannoli that looks quite as scrumptuous.

I would have had a hard time sharing the cannoli too!

I think God might have dropped me off on the wrong side of the world...and I am meant to find my way there...hehe!

I love your blog

Hey what was that pinkish dessert with a darker chocolate layer? It looked kind of like...AN ELBOW. Ha. Don't you just hate when you can't get a full pic without any obstacles. I remember once at Williamsburg VA I was trying so hard to take a pic of the colonial people. Everyone saw me just standing there holding the camera and people get walking up to her and ignoring me. I'm a little fanatical about taking photos with no unwanted people, kids, animals, boats, planes, trains, or automobiles in the way. Centered and picture perfect. Ha...rarely happens.

Did you eat that think like a donut or with a utensil, aaa?

It's probably good that you were the one chosen for this journey and not me......I don't think I could have brought myself to try weird looking food like that. :)

But that bus driver.....now that's another story. ;)

Oh Amy you crack me up! That cannoli looked sooooo good. I've never had one but I can already tell that I could heart those a lot.

Now the bus driver, what's his issue? Has he never heard of bloggy world?! Geesh!

Oh, yum. I've never had cannoli, either. It looks like something to put on the bucket list. Truly, I have to agree with Elaine: I would gain 50 pounds! I love, love, love anything pasta.
I am so jealous!

Ok the cannoli looked as good as you made it sound along with all the other desserts. Thanks, I will not go eat a twinkie and pretend.

Oh sweet cannoli...how I love thee. =o) Usually when you take a picture of an Italian, they expect a tip. I didn't realize this until a friend took a picture of one, and he wouldn't leave her alone until she did. They think of it as a service they are providing and expect to be paid for it. I agree with the mob. DO NOT LEAVE THE CANNOLI!
